Reporters are invited to tour the NOAA ships Rainier and Fairweather at the NOAA Marine Operations Center-Pacific on March 21, in Newport, Oregon, and speak with their commanding officers, in advance of public tours on March 22.
The two 231-foot hydrographic survey vessels, both celebrating 50 years of service this year, map the seafloor to update nautical charts. NOAA Ship Rainier is homeported in Newport, Oregon, and NOAA Ship Fairweather, Rainier’s sister ship, is homeported in Ketchikan, Alaska.
