On Friday, Sept. 29, experts from NOAA will discuss how information from JPSS-1, the first in a series of four advanced polar-orbiting satellites called the Joint Polar Satellite System, will be used in the management of fisheries and other protected species.

Oceanographers have long used satellite data to assess sea level, ocean currents and waves, ocean temperature, biological productivity and even detect potentially harmful algae blooms. Instruments aboard JPSS-1 will provide scientists with higher resolution sea-surface temperature, ocean color, and even sea ice data that will aid in managing fisheries and protected species, such as whales. For example, one of the new JPSS instruments helped a survey cruise search for and survey Bluefin tuna larvae. This data is in turn used by fisheries managers to assess populations and establish catch efforts. Environmental data from the satellite also allows scientists to better characterize the habitats of marine mammals and sea turtles.
JPSS-1 is scheduled for launch on Nov. 10 at 1:47 a.m. Pacific Time from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
