Hurricane season begins June 1
NOAA will announce its initial outlook for the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season during a news conference on May 25 in College Park, Md. In addition to the seasonal prediction, speakers also will discuss forecasting improvements at NOAA’s National Hurricane Center this year and provide information about how the public can prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, which begins June 1.

Hurricane Matthew hit the western Atlantic, including parts of Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, the southeastern U.S., and the Canadian Maritimes, from September to October 2016. It was responsible for more than 500 deaths and caused more than $15 billion in damage. (Image credit: NOAA)
