NOAA Fisheries' acoustic guidance divides marine mammals into five hearing groups, recognizing that not all marine mammals hear and use sound identically. The guidance identifies thresholds for each group. Arctic bearded seals, like this one, are extremely vocal. Within the guidance, bearded seals are part of the phocid pinniped hearing group.
