Recent above normal temperatures and humid weather in the U.S. Northeast will take a break for the early part of the weekend when more seasonable temperatures prevail, but by the end of the weekend above-normal temps are forecast to make a return and last through midweek.

Scattered rain showers are possible across much of the eastern half of the country, while dry conditions that have fueled ongoing wildfires will persist in the West.

The greatest chances for rainfall exist in the Midwest, where heavy rain this weekend — coupled with recent rainfall in the region — could result in flash flood development for parts of Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota and Illinois. Wet weather is also likely for states along the Gulf Coast.

As the weekend draws to a close, the northern Rockies begin to cool, while temperatures in the Southern California desert and Arizona will continue to soar into next week.
